Description
German U-boat sinking SS Parkgate, First World War. This British merchant ship, the steamer SS Parkgate (upper right), was sunk by German U-boat U-35 (lower left) in the Mediterranean, on 4 April 1917. The battle lasted an hour and 15 minutes, after which the holed ship was sunk. The wreck lies 130 kilometres off Cap de Fer, Algeria. The steamer's captain was taken prisoner. During World War I, German U-boats (submarines) were used to attack merchant shipping in an attempt to starve the Allies. They sank millions tons of shipping and thousands of ships.
