British trenches near Ypres, Belgium, First World War. These trenches are in the Ypres Salient, the scene of several major battles during the First World War (1914-1918), part of the trench warfare along the Western Front. Trenches on the low ground around Ypres were often constructed from breastworks of sandbags filled with clay. From the photographic section of the Imperial War Museum.
